Final Blog

As my final assignment, I was asked to honestly evaluate my blog. I can honestly say that I am satisfied with this semester's project. I followed All the instruction given by Prof. Evans, and blogged based on the assignments given. I was surprised to find out I had one of the best blogs for this semester. To be honest, I thought every one's blog as visual as mine. But it didn't always look this good. A few weeks ago, Prof Evans advised me to add more visuals to my blog. Needless to say, I didn't waste any time and began fixing it immediately. I must say, it felt good to be praised for my work.

A Visual Success

I think this a great and comical commercial! The message is crystal clear. It simply implies it is better to be anything else other than a Red Sox fan.

Dads are suppose to be supportive with their sons no matter what. In the video the dad is explaining his feelings about his younger son. He wishes his son could be more like his older son who happens to be very flamboyant; something most dad would dread. Not this dad, as a true Yankees fan, he knows it's far worst to be a Red Sox fan.

A Visual Miscue

I also find this commercial to be humorous but, this video is implying that Yankees fans don't like Red Sox fans and don't want to work with them. I don't believe is to be true at all. I work with three Red Sox fans and have nothing against them, why would I, we have twenty more World Series! On the contrary, no Boston fan has ever gotten pick-on in New York City quite as much as Yankees fans do out there in Boston. Not only have I witnessed it first hand but many others have seen this also and agree 100% with me. So with that being said, I believe this commercial is backwards and therefore miscued.

My Example of the Type of Advertisement I Plan to Use for My Final

This is my example of the type of commercial I will do for my Final.

Describing the Type of Advertisement I'm Going to Use for my Final and Who is My Audience for this Ad

The type of advertising I'm choosing for my Final is similar to the commercial I put above this blog. Both have pictures of the new Yankee Stadium as well as pictures of the 2009 players. Another similarity is the music played in the back round. I plan to have that Olympic theatrical music to emphasize on how magical it is to be watching a game live at the stadium. My Final is going to be trying to convince the crowd between the ages of 21-35 to buy Season Tickets for the "Bleacher Creatures" seats. Since Baseball is considered American pass-time, especially for American families, I want to direct my attention to friends who come to watch Yankee games. I am reminding this crowd of the savings when buying Season Tickets. The "Bleacher Creature" is meant for an older crowd since it seems to be a little more aggressive in that particular area of the stadium. Most people buy tickets in the "Bleacher Creature" when they want to spend some time with a group of friends and have a great time without spending a fortune. Season tickets is the answer.

Recommendation for all baseball fans

Feeling upset, disappointed in your MLB team? Are you frustrated with your team's performance this season. If you feel your team has let you down yet another season, now would be the time to convert into a Yankees fan.
Now that the Yankees have conquered their 40Th ALCS Pennant and their 27Th World Series, now is the perfect time to cross-over and root for a REAL team, before the 2010 season starts. Being a Yankees fan has many privileges and very little disadvantages, actually the only disadvantage is having other fans be jealous of your teams constant victories.
As a Yankees fan you get the privilege and honor to be part of this baseball dynasty, get the opportunity to make unforgettable memories with some of the best players to ever live, including but not limited to, first baseman-Mark Teixeira, second baseman- Robinson Cano, shortstop-Derek Jeter, third baseman-Alex Rodriguez, catcher- Jorge Posada, outfielders, Nick Swisher and Melky Cabrera. Also, watch some of the world's greatest pitchers such as Andy Pettitte, C.C. Sabathia, and Mariano Rivera.
The sooner you realize no other team can do what this team does, the sooner you can decide to be part of greatness.

Congratulations to the New York Yankees for the 27th World Series

This e-mail was sent to rhalsey@yankees.com My name is Maribel Burgos and I am a life-long die-hard Yankees fan. I am currently taking a Business Communications class at BMCC. As an assignment, I was asked to write a letter congratulating this team for winning it's 40Th American League Championship Pennant as well as winning your 27Th World Series. It is a great honor and privilege to be considered a Yankees fan and be part of the greatest team in Major League Baseball. I only hope this team will continues to strive for excellence, like their performance this year. If there is in any way possible for someone to reply to this e-mail at their earliest convenience, it would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, your biggest fan, Maribel Burgos

The Different Types of Visual Presentation That Best Represent the Yankees

The New York Yankees, like most Major League Baseball teams, have all different types of visual presentations. For example, there are hundreds of websites including the Yankees official website, dedicated to this team.
These website were created to help fans find whatever it is that they are looking for, scores, tickets, merchandise, etc.
Another visual presentation that helps this company is, the games that are broad casted on TV and everywhere available. Playing the sport and winning the games are the best way to sell the Yankees logo and in return it generates more revenue, which is what every company wants to do, make more money. The Yankees success is not only based on how many wins but how to increase the fan base, winning World Series helps sell the logo, this is a form of visual presentation, which apparently works for the 27Th World Champs.

How Visual Evolution Has Affected the Yankees

Thanks to new technology, baseball fans can watch their favorite team play anywhere they want, at the beach or even at work. Many teams like the Yankees have come up with a new system that allows fans to watch game live through their desktop or laptop for a small charge. This will allow fans to keep track of their teams no matter where they go. This is a win win situation for both parties, the company generates more money while fans can watch the game anywhere. Another form of visual evolution affected by the Yankees is the huge screen TV that was specially made for the Yankees new stadium. This TV was built before the stadium and so that the seating arrangements could be built around this massive screen, to assure the best visuals options for the sitting fans at the field. There are also electronic banners built all over the stadium so fans can see the scores no matter where they look.

My Opinion of This Situation

As a die-hard Yankees fan, I could not agree more with Steinbrenner. The truth is Joe Torre lost his fire. Now don't get me wrong, I appreciate all he did in the 90's but after the Subway Series in 2000, he seemed to not care as much as he once did. From what I had witness during the games, Torre was not contributing the same motivation and management as he did in the previous years. For example, in 2007 when the Yankees were playing against the Indians, there was a infestation of flying ants in the mound while Joba Chainberland was pitching. This was a important game for us and we blew it. Mainly because Torre did not speak up and ask for time-out when his pitcher clearly needed it. We ended up losing that game and also losing our spot in the Play-offs. That was the first time in 13 years that the Yankees did not get that far. In my opinion, firing Joe Torre was heaven sent.

Problem Within the Yankees--November Post

The Yankees had a bad year in 2007, it was the first time since 1994 that the Yankees did not win the ALDS. As you can imagine, George Steinbrenner was furious. Can you blame him? This company sends hundreds of millions each year to help the team make it at least that far, if not win the World Series and all it's entirely. Here is a link to a websites that addresses this problem,http://www.nytimes.com/2007/10/30/sports/baseball/30yankees.html In this web page, it explains what Steinbrenner did to correct the problem at hand. Besides trading some of the players who did not contribute as much as they should have, Steinbreener also fired Joe Torre. He then hired Joe Girardi as the new Yankee's manager. Girardi chose the #27 for his jersey, as a symbol of what he was going to help accomplish. And what happened this year? Yankees won their 27Th W.S. of course!

Writing A Business Message

Another important thing you should keep in mind when writing a business message is the information you send out in the paragraphs. There are three basic elements to writing a good paragraph. The first is the topic sentence. this helps the audience know what you are going to be talking about. The second element is your supporting sentences. this will show the audience the facts behind what you are stating. The last element is the transitional element. In order for your audience to keep track of the information you are giving, you should have transitional words to help the audience understand your train of thought. Also, try to repeat some words and information to remind the audience of your message. Use words that will remind your audience that will help them see your idea more clearly.

Writing A Business Message

When writing a business message there are a few step needed to take in order to get the point across clearly. For starters, it is extremely important to keep good language. In other words, do not use any curse words or anything that can be considered disrespectful. Second, avoid using obsolete phrases, such as any groups of words that might be considered intimate. Third, be careful not use humor or there is a possibility that your presentation may not by taken seriously. Last, use a conversational tone. By maintaining this form of tone you are sending a message of professionalism. If you speak with an informal tone, you are sending a message of friendship instead of a professional working environment.

Comparison of the "Pursuader" and the Yankees company

In the second segment, "Emotion Branding" the people explain the relationship between consumers and brands. They talk about how the 1990's changed the way we sell products as well as how we view them as a consumer. They also saw a resemblance between cults and cult brands, like Harley Davidson. The New York Yankees are no exception to this new wave of advertising. The Yankees take pride in having the most World Series. That has become their main source of advertising. Having the most championships and pennants makes it easier to get the audience attention. It gives the fans a sense of superiority over the other teams and effortlessly draws a bigger crowd. It's what the segment called " moving brands into experience". This is trying to create loyalty beyond reason. This is a way of turning a brand into a culture for the benefit of the company.

The Progress of My Presentation

So far I'm about half way through preparing my presentation. My proposal is based on lowing ticket prices at the New Yankee Stadium. The first slide is the Yankees Logo with the title. The second is a chart of the Yankees financial breakdown.(showing the four financial aspects of revenue; Sport, Brand Management, Market and Stadium, in pie form) according to Forbes Magazine. The third is a picture of Yankees Stadium. (signifying the financial aspect I want to focus on) The fourth a chart is the statistics of the different groups who go to the ballgames.(in pie form) The fifth is a family at the stadium (signifying wholesome family entertainment, also, families being the highest customers) The sixth is descriptions the seating arrangements and the profit it has created so far this year at the new stadium. The seventh is the comparison of the difference in revenue from past years at the old stadium. The eighth is the seating proposition for next year. The ninth is "My alliterative proposal" and the revenue it will create next year and the years to come. The tenth will be a chart showing the difference in revenue between the three; this year, next years and what I have in mind. This will prove how my proposal is the better choice.

Completing Reports and Proposals

In order to complete a report or proposal one must : Revise the message- Figure out what is the most important things you want to say, review and edit for better understanding. Produce the message- Use best design and layout for a clear professional appearance. Proofread the message- Check for mistakes in spelling layout and mechanics. Distribute the message- Make sure to deliver the documents successfully. One must also keep in mind the audiences expectations at all time. It is imperative to remember the audience will ask what is in it for them. The length of the presentation is also just as important. If the report or proposal is too long, you will lose the audiences attention. Try to keep organizational traditions to indicate what should be included in the report. Perfatory Parts contain front-end material that give key preliminary information. This allows the audience to decide how to read the report. The cover generally contains the company's name and logo. Title Fly and Title Page includes just a single sheet of paper with only the title. Letter of Authorizations and Letter Acceptance is a letter stating the right to do the report or proposal. Letter of Transmittal is a specialized form of cover letter, given to the person who authorized it.

Planning Reports and Proposals

There are a few many ways to communicate within a business. One of these forms are through reports; there are two types, Analytical and Informational reports. Informational reports are based on data, facts, feedback and things of that nature. Analytical reports consist of both analysis as well as information, which would include recommendations. Proposals are a form of persuading the audience to choose his/her options. To make a proper report one must first figure out what is the main objective: Clarify the problem or opportunity. State the purpose of the investigation. Explain the what task need to be dealt with. Describe the products that are the outcome of the investigation. Check for project assignments, schedules and resource requirements. Review the report before making a delivery. Keep the following in mind when writing a report: Understand the audiences expectations. Find the format best suited for the task. Keep the report as simple as possible. Explain your outline clearly and affectively.

Finding, Evaluating, and Processing Information

There is many reasons to be a Yankees fan. With proper research anyone can determine the achievement this particular team has accomplished. Looking up the Yankees history is not hard to do nowadays. With technology like the Internet it is a blast when looking for the research. 1. Plan your research- Find out exactly what you need to save time. 2. Locate the data and information you need- Use the information to get your point across. 3. Process the data and information you located-Form and use the information in a organized fashion to get out your message. 4.Apply your findings- Summarize the important data to draw conclusions based on what you've learned. 5. Manage information effectively- Use the data effectively to save time and money. Keeping ethics and etiquette's in your research is also very important. If a fan is trying to convince another fan who's team is better, name calling is not considered good etiquette's. Instead, try convincing with facts. For example, instead of saying "your team sucks", a better approach would be saying " your team stands in last place" this is a way of saying they suck without resorting to name calling. Also, maintaining your composer when a team wins or loses is another form of ethics when it comes to sportsmanship. No needs to be a sour loser if their teams loses or being an obnoxious bragger when their teams win. It's just best to take the sport for what it is, just a game.

Communicating in Teams and Mastering Listening and Nonverbal Communication Skills

As you may already know Professional Baseball, also known as Major League Baseball, is formed into a total of thirty teams divided into two Leagues, fourteen in the American League and sixteen in the National League. Communication within each team is crucial, both verbal as well as nonverbal. Listening to each other is just as important. How these players inner-act and understand one another will dramatically affect the games outcome. One false move or miscommunication can cost any team to give up a run or perhaps even cause the lose of the game. Mastering listening consist of giving the speaker your undivided attention while still observing your surroundings, this takes some practice but must be mastered to achieve maxim affect of teamwork. Some forms of nonverbal communication skills are the signs the teammates give one another. For example, when the pitcher and catcher need to communicate, the catcher would give different signs signifying what pitch to throw next, keeping the batter questioning the next pitch. Another form of nonverbal communication is the signs the base coaches give the runners on base, informing them what is happening on the field, whether it's signaling them to run or remain on that base.

A Message About the Yankees

Do you love Baseball? If so then take the time to read this message. This is the best time of year to become a New York Yankees fan. The Yankees are just a few games away from winning their 27Th World Series. This phenomenal team is celebrating their victory for sweeping the Red Sox and winning the East Division title; now they're on their way to the play-offs to hopefully win their 27Th title as World Champions. The Yankees have just won hundreds games this season, an achievement many great teams never get to accomplish. With such amazing hitters like Derek Jeter, Mike Teixeria, Johnny Damon, Hideki Matsui and my personal favorite Alex Rodriguez, it's a perfect combination of success. Also, with great pitchers like C.C. Sabathia, A.J. Burnett, Andy Pettitte and my favorite closer, Mariano Rivera, the Yankees are determine to finish this season in first place as well as take home their 27Th World Series. Keep in mind, the St. Louis Cardinals lead in second place with only 11 W.S. That's quite a jump from 26 to 11! So if you want to be part of the winning team; the biggest and most famous franchise, now would be the time to show your Yankees Pride! Let's go Yankees!

Writing a Business Message

When making a business one must remember a important question will be asking themselves, " what is in it for them? That is a question the person sending out the message must keep in mind when trying to get the audiences attention. The message should be much more than just giving information. One should also consider the right words for the occasion. For example, when writing a speech, it is important to avoid using gender bias words which contains "man". Instead of man-made, it's best to write artificial or synthetic. Instead of saying mankind, it is best to use words like humanity, human beings or even people. Another big mistake many people do is use racial/ethnic Bias. Avoid stereotypes or identifying people by their race or ethnicity. It is not the persons race but what the person offers that's important to the business. The Yankees have learned the importance of diversity and therefore know the importance of each individual; there is no need to bring up their race, it is irrelevant.

Communicating in a World of Diversity

It before the nineties the Yankees were not considered a very diverse team, some would even go to the extent of calling this team racist. This team was predominantly just Caucasians; with every little to no minorities, Blacks or Latin players. In time Streinbrenner learned that by hiring a larger diversity of players, the team could benefit by attracting a bigger fan base, and will also help the team win more games. Before and during the fifties, the Yankees dominated the Major League Baseball, but, shortly as time began to change and segregation slowly started to disappear, more and more teams began recruiting minority players, such as Jackie Robinson and Louis Castro. This brought a whole new level of intensity to the ball game. Unfortunately, the Yankees were one of the last teams to catch on to the new phase and ultimately declined in wins. In the sixties and seventies, the Yankees only managed to win four World Series in those two decades,1961,1962,1977 and 1978. When Steinbrenner bought the Yankees from CNN in the early seventies, he realized the importance of hiring minorities and did so. But it wasn't till the mid nineties that the Yankees began to flourish with victories, winning consistently in 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2000, and reclaiming what's indisputably theirs, the title of being THE BEST!

Enhancing Presentation with Slides and Other Visuals

Appearance is crucial when maintaining a business. For the Yankees clubhouse, there's no exceptions. When you enter Yankees stadium, the first thing you notice is this huge Projection TV on the left displaying the game. This was put there for a specific reason. It is a way to advertise the game so that the spectators outside can get a full view of the field and players. This was set up to intrigue the crowd outside to buy tickets and join the fun. Another important viewing aspect for the Yankees ballpark is the Monument Park, which was built to commemorate some of their best players. It contains the monuments of five baseball icons - Miller Huggins, Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Mantle. There are also 20 plaques that recognize the careers of 20 pinstriped legends, including Yogi Berra, Whitey Ford, Elston Howard, Reggie Jackson and Don Mattingly. This was built so the fans can honor those who played with the pinstripe and contributed to this teams success. Electrical stripes are displayed all over the stadium to help the fans keep track of the score. Everything I mentioned in this essay are different forms of enhancement to help the vistors and fans keep track of what is going on, as well as what has happened within this ballpark/team.

Persuasive Business Message.

There are many similarities between writing a persuasive message and writing a business persuasive message, both need you to identify the seven ways to establish your credibility, but a business message must also have the AIDA model: Attention- get the audiences attention Interest- explain what you are offering Desire- Explain how this will benefit the audience Action- Explain the suggestions you plan to take There are both emotional and logical appeals to consider when making a message, you want to have a balance of the two the get the point across clearly. Also, there are things you would want to avoid when relaying a message. 1.Avoid generalizing 2.Avoid repeating your facts too many times 3.Avoid attacking your opponent. 4. Avoid oversimplifying a problem 5.Avoid assuming any cause and effect 6.Avoid faulty analogies 7. Avoid illogical support

Persuasive Writing

As a assignment in my Business Communication class, I had to write a persuasive letter to the Yankees in hopes of being hired. To my surprise, chapter 10 is all based on persuasive writing. It explains the three steps needed: 1. Planing your message-First, you need to find a way to convince your audience that you offer the best alternative. I. Analyzing your situation. II. Gather information to close the gap between the audiences emotions and beliefs with your own. III. Select the right form of communication suitable for your message. IV. Organize the information properly to make it the most effective. 2. Write out the message by establishing credibility. I.Use simple language so everyone can understand. II. Support your message with facts. III. Identify the sources as form of proof to your facts. IV. Be or find an expert to back up your facts. V. Establish a common ground between you and your audience. VI. Know all side to the issue, what you favor and what you don't. VII. Explain your good intentions. 3. Keep full details and avoid shortcuts for maximum effect while judging your argument objectively.

Steinbrenner, Communicating to the Public

By having strict grooming policies, Steinbrenner is making a statement. He expects professionalism from all his staff, including player, coaches, and the executives. All members of this ball-park are expected to be clean-shaved. No one is permitted to wear any facial hair except for a mustache, and their hair may not be grown past the collar. This is telling the public" I have class and care about my appearance". Another form of communication is Steinbrenner removal of names off the player's jerseys. This was done to not distract the crowd from the game. Steinbrenner wants the public to focus on the team as a whole instead of individual players. This allows the fans to pay attention to the teams progress instead of players record.

Relating to the Yankees

From what I gathered from chapter 1 is, communication is the key to successful company. It is not only what you say but how to say to your employees to get them to work as productively as possible. In order for the staff to take the situation seriously, one must explain the importance of resolving the problem for every ones sake. For example, Steinbrenner, the owner of the New York Yankees, has very high expectations of his team. He told the general manager, Joe Girardi, if he doesn't get the Yankees to the play-off, he will be terminated from the clubhouse, and the same goes for any Yankee player who does not live up to his full potential. Because of the obscenely high payroll, these players are expected to preform better than any other team, and they are constantly reminded of the consequences every time they mess up. Due to clear communication, all Yankee players strive for excellence, they are aware of the repercussion if they fail, for example, not getting their contact renewal and being traded to another team.

The New York Yankees as a Product or Company

The New York Yankees are a Major League Baseball team from the American League East Division. This team has more championships than any other franchise in North American professional sports history. With 27 World Series championships and 40 American League Pennants, the New York Yankees lead in titles as well as revenue. According to Forbes magazine, the Yankees are the only team who's net worth exceeds 1 billion dollars, 1.7 billion to be exact. Although this team have received a negative reputation for their extreme spending in pursuit of winning (buying the best players in hopes of winning their 27Th championship). According to Wikipedia, the Yankees have achieved widespread popularity and a dedicated fan base. As a product, the Yankees logo has been proclaimed as the most famous and valuable symbol in all sports. Based on their record this season, the Yankees are leading the entire MLB with 86 wins and 49 loses. This captivating team seems to be gaining more fans with every win. This company is thriving in both profits as well as bragging rights (which is important to a fan like me).
